Studio vs location

Location

Sometimes it makes much more sense to shoot on location for instance if you needed a field you could just go to a field and shoot there. Location can also add more of a narrative to the images, it can also make them seem more realistic.

The main problems of shooting on location are things such as weather and having no mains supply you need to be organised and fully prepared when shooting on location and bare in mind travel and equipment.

Studio

The studio is particularly useful for fashion photography, you have total control over the lighting and you dont have to worry about the weather. you also have a range of backgrounds readily available in the studio and basic or elaborate sets can be built to add more of a narrative to the images.

of course there are potential problems such as technical issues or health and safety but in general it is quite easy to control your images in a studio setting.

Ring flash test shoot

These two images are from a test shoot i did using the ring flash, i havnt edited them as i was just experimenting with the aesthetic and practicing using it before using it for a future shoot. I am still really keen on the aesthetic and find it relatively easy to use so i intend on using it for future photo shoots.

I am particularly interested in the aesthetic of the ring flash and would be interested in using it both for this assignment and my independent practice assignment, i found this example on the internet.

Art department

This website is a collection of creative bodies of work, i find it particularly useful for looking at photographers, stylists and set/prop designers. Again this site is useful for research, ideas and inspiration for my own work. I have used art-dept quite alot in the past and think i will also find it useful for this assignment.

Trend hunter

I heard about this site through one of the styling students. Its particularly good for looking through images and researching, you can type in a key word and it will give you all kinds of images relating to that word from a range of different categories.

This is a tool that i intend on using for inspiration and ideas for my current and future work.

Fashion blogs: JAK & JIL

This blog works in a similar way to The Sartorialist in that it features street photographs and photos from fashion shows, again it has both candid and posed images and is based strongly around fashion. I like looking at this blog on quite a regular basis i particularly like the quite closely cropped images of certain parts of the outfit or the accessories.

I really like this blog, its really interesting to have a look at every now and again. It features street fashion images and images from fashion shows etc all over the world. I find it fascinating to look at these images of all of these different people in different countries in different clothes. I really like the style of photography on this blog, the feeling is quite warm and i like how some of the images are candid and some posed. Its interesting to look at this blog from a styling point of view, the people photographed have a great sense of style and know well what clothes and accessories work well together.

Show studio is a website that i am really interested in, i am particularly fascinated by the live shoots that they broadcast on the site. I also really like the blog on the site, its a fantastic source of information for fashion and photography.
