Meeting with the group

Today we met up as a group again to discuss the assignment further, we are thinking of using a male model, i have never worked with a male model for a shoot and think it will be a good experience and something different. Working in the fashion industry we will be required to work with both make and female models so this will be a valuable experience.

We have also decided to look at clothing as a language within our shoot, we want to use a variety of different clothing styles that represent different types of people. we will then go on to ask different people what kind of person they think would wear that outfit to show hoe different types of clothing give off certain impressions. We will show how different clothing expresses different things, such as the type of person someone is or what occupation they have, what they are interested in etc.

Clothing and the significance of dress

After the lecture we had on monday it got me thinking more about clothing and its significance in the world of fashion and to everyone in general.

Personally i think that clothing is significant to everyone even if they think that its not, everybody has a style of clothing that they wear. We choose what shops we go into, which sections we look in, what items we pick up and what we wear them with. We make various decisions that affect the clothes we wear and our image in general.

We use our clothes to express ourselves, it can be argued that we use communicate through clothing more than we do through talking, we choose to talk to very few people but lots of people see us and our clothes everyday. The first thing we notice about someone is the way we look and often we only have someone's looks to go on.

Certain types of people wear certain types of clothes or dont wear certain types of clothes. In other words we can often find out alot of information out about someone from what theyre wearing, or misinformation. This is an idea that i am really interested in.

Straights ups/street fashion

I really like this kind of street fashion photography, i like how it captures peoples individual style on a day that they weren't expecting to be photographed. I think its really interesting to look at this sort of photography when thinking about clothes and styling, i find it quite fascinating to see how people put certain items of clothing together and how people express them selves through the clothes they wear.

Male models

For a while the main focus was on female models and it wasn't until fairly recently that they gained the same recognition as female models. Males models have gained a similar status to female models, many have become celebrities in their own right just like many female models. Many male models have also been used for ad campaigns such as David Beckham (below) for Giorgio Armani in a similar way to Madonna in the previous post.

Adam Hulme

These photographs are by Adam Hulme, and i got it from the Storm model management website: http://www.stormmodels.com/AndrewHulme.html?boardId=1006.
There are lots different types of models on storm like and other modeling agency, again like with female models there are usually trends with male models, but there are also a wide variety working within the fashion industry.

David Gandy

These photographs are of male model David Gandy, he has become one of the celebrity male models. He has been photographed for various campaigns and walked in various runway shows, he is probably most well know for the Dolce and Gabanna light blue advert (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHr07QRK0B8).

Celebrities as models

Celebrities are often used within fashion advertising, they are used to help create a strong brand that will be associated with that particular celebrity. Its usually high end campaigns that use them due to their bigger budgets and status.
This image for Louis Vuitton feature Madonna and are strong images that will keep Louis Vuitton associated with Madonna and perhaps her kind of lifestyle.

Model

The model is crucial in the fashion images, the focus is usually on them so its important that they are the right person for the job (particularly in simple studio shots where there isnt alot going on).
There are always trends when it comes to models but today one of the most important things is that they are versatile, they have to be able to carry off different looks at opposite ends of the scale. They almost have to be like actors/actresses to fit into the different characters/genres.
The model must communicate the right thing within the image, for instance many fashion images work on the basis of aspirations whether thats lifestyle or body image the model must fit.

Gemma Ward

These images are of model Gemma Ward, she has been used for a range of runway, editorial and advertising and is incredibly versatile.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

These images are of Rosie Huntington-whiteley, she is most famous for being a 'Victorias secret' model but she has also been used for fashion and other campaigns. She has been used in various ways and although not as versatile as Gemma ward she can still portray a range of looks within photographs.
